Advanced Business Writing Training

Our Advanced Business Writing programme is suitable for executives, corporate communication specialists and HR professionals. By completing this two-day programme, they will learn how to

Design

The training comprises four interconnected parts:

1: The principles of business writing

The seven principles of business writing - focus, purpose, meaning, substance, structure, clarity and humility – are the building blocks of a great text. We learn how to identify and apply them within a business context. We also discuss how to design an effective writing strategy and how to manage the writing process when different stakeholders are involved. The next time you’re faced with an empty piece of paper and a deadline, you will know what to do.

2: The mechanics of language

Dramatically improve the impact of your writing by learning how to identify language patterns that support or undermine your message. Are you being precise enough? What kind of language appeals to the senses and people’s imagination? When are jargon and fuzziness your friend? How can you use suggestive language to influence people’s thinking and perceptions?

3: The strategic role of writing

How can you use the ‘magic of language’ to support your organisation’s mission, vision and strategy? How do you develop stories that appeal to people’s values, beliefs, identity and sense of purpose? We look at the strategic role of writing and ‘identity levels’ and see how they apply to some current organisational themes.

4: Writing power tools

There are four tools that should be in every writer’s toolbox: messaging, acknowledging, framing and questioning. By using these tools, the writer can craft succinct, powerful and motivating messages, or position issues in such a way that they support his goals. We discuss how you can make the best use of these tools.

Delivery

These four parts, which take half a day each to complete, provide a strategic yet practical overview of business writing. The training uses simple models to increase insight into language and taps into the collective expertise of the group to relate them to day-to-day issues. Each part of the training is concluded with a group exercise that gets the material into the participants’ muscles. Both days are capped with a collective debrief, to share and reflect on what has been learnt.

Personalised coursework

Following each day of training, participants will apply what they have learnt to an individual assignment. This will be tailored to their work environment and learning goals. Each person will receive personal guidance and feedback from the trainer via e-mail or telephone. This personalised approach maximises the value of the training for each individual.

What else?

The training is high-paced and encourages participants to contribute their own expertise and insights. A training manual is provided before the start of the programme, in order for participants to prepare and determine their learning goals. This training programme runs each day from 09:00 until 18:00 and is suitable for groups of between 6 and 10 people.
